1. Start with the geographic record, not an assumed market
The U.S. Census Bureau records Sunnyvale as a municipality in Dallas County, Texas. Its 2020–2024 ACS five-year population estimate is 8,336, with a margin of error of 25. That is a description of the town and its population estimate—not evidence of legal demand, search activity, competition, calls, matters or revenue. A dashboard should therefore keep Sunnyvale, Dallas County, any broader metropolitan area and Texas as separate geographic labels. Combining them into one “market” could make a report difficult to interpret. Ask to see how service-and-city targets, calls and source attribution are named. Decide whether your firm wants Sunnyvale-specific reporting, county-level reporting, broader Texas coverage or several views with explicit labels.
Recommended approach
Use the consultation to approve a geographic naming convention before reviewing performance. Require each location field to identify the actual area it represents, and do not treat the town’s population estimate as a forecast of prospective clients.
