Put Brookings inquiries in geographic context without guessing at demand
Your service area may include Brookings city, other parts of Brookings County or a broader South Dakota footprint. Those are different geographic questions. The Census record identifies Brookings city as a municipality and records its county relationship as Brookings County; it does not show how many people need legal help, where they search, how many firms compete or how many matters a firm receives. Attribution is useful here because it lets you examine the geography attached to actual inquiries and matters rather than treating the city’s population as a forecast. A review can ask whether your intake records distinguish Brookings from Brookings County and from other areas you serve, and whether those distinctions are used consistently when evaluating outcomes.
Recommended approach
Decide which geographic fields your firm needs for intake, reporting and matter review. Keep Brookings city, Brookings County and South Dakota as separate scopes where that distinction matters. Do not use the ACS population estimate as a lead, case or revenue projection.
