1. Start with the geography your firm actually serves
Charleston city is a municipality in South Carolina. The 2020–2024 American Community Survey records an estimated population of 154,338, with a margin of error of 200, and identifies Berkeley County and Charleston County in the city’s county relationships. That is context for deciding how to name and group geographic reporting; it is not evidence of legal demand, search volume, competition, leads or revenue. A Charleston firm may also serve clients beyond the city. The dashboard should therefore distinguish Charleston city from Berkeley County, Charleston County, another defined market area and South Carolina rather than treating every location label as interchangeable.
Recommended approach
Before adopting a reporting view, write down the geographic units you want to compare. Ask to see whether a city, county, metropolitan area or statewide target is represented as a separate reporting dimension, and agree on which location belongs to the lead record, the ranking target and the matter. Do not use the population estimate as a forecast. Use it only to frame the geographic scope of the conversation.
