1. Define the geography before you judge performance
The U.S. Census Bureau records Bismarck as a municipality in Burleigh County, with a 2020–2024 ACS five-year population estimate of 75,556 and a margin of error of 71. That is geographic and population context only; it does not establish legal demand, search volume, competition, leads or revenue. Your dashboard should therefore distinguish a Bismarck target from a broader Burleigh County or North Dakota target. Ask how a city label, county relationship and any wider service area will appear in rankings, lead records and reporting. A single geographic bucket can make a local campaign look more or less productive than it is.
Recommended approach
Before approving measurement, write down the places your firm serves and the geographic question each report must answer. In the review, ask to see how location data is represented and whether a result can be interpreted without treating Bismarck’s population as a demand forecast.
