1. Start with the geography your firm actually serves
Patterson is recorded as a municipal town in Putnam County, New York. If your firm serves Patterson as well as other communities, attribution should preserve the distinction between a Patterson inquiry, a Putnam County inquiry and an inquiry from somewhere else. A population estimate is not a substitute for those records. It cannot tell you which legal services people seek, how they search, whether they contact your office or whether a matter becomes viable. The useful question is narrower: when an inquiry arrives from a geographic area you serve, can you see the path that led to contact and the outcome that followed?
Recommended approach
Review geographic fields and source records during a consultation. Decide which locations matter to your practice, which intake answers identify a qualified inquiry, and whether reporting should distinguish Patterson from Putnam County and other service areas. Do not use Patterson’s population as a forecast.
