1. Set the geographic boundary before discussing stories
The Census record identifies Lewiston as a municipal town in Niagara County, New York. That relationship matters because a story may be statewide, county-level or tied specifically to Lewiston. A page about a New York legal change may be relevant to a Lewiston practice, while a page about an incident outside the firm’s service area may not be. Population establishes the size of the town’s recorded population, but it does not establish who searches, what they need, how many firms compete or whether a news topic will produce an inquiry.
Recommended approach
In a consultation, map each practice area to the geographic language the firm is prepared to serve. Decide whether pages should refer to Lewiston, Niagara County, New York or another defined area. Review whether the proposed coverage would be useful to an affected person in that area, rather than treating the town’s population as a forecast.
