1. Set the geographic boundary before discussing local news
Las Vegas is recorded as a municipality in San Miguel County, New Mexico. The 2020–2024 American Community Survey 5-year estimate records 13,000 residents, with a margin of error of 28. That is an eligibility and service-area fact, not evidence of search demand, legal need, competition, leads, cases or revenue. A firm should therefore distinguish among Las Vegas, San Miguel County, the broader New Mexico market and any metropolitan area it actually serves. Those are not interchangeable audiences. A story involving a Las Vegas road, a San Miguel County court or a New Mexico statute may require different wording, disclaimers and calls to action. Coverage should not use a city label merely to make a page appear local.
Recommended approach
During the consultation, map the geographic relationships that matter to your practice: the municipality, San Miguel County, statewide New Mexico coverage and any additional area the firm intentionally serves. Ask how stories are filtered against that map and how a page will identify the affected jurisdiction without overstating the firm’s reach.
