1. Define the coverage area before choosing stories
Gallup is recorded as a city in McKinley County. That does not mean every story in McKinley County is relevant to your firm, and it does not establish that your firm serves every person in the county. A useful Legal News scope should distinguish Gallup from McKinley County, New Mexico, and any other area your engagement rules permit. It should also distinguish local incidents from statewide legal developments. The question is whether a reader affected by a story could reasonably see your firm’s practice as relevant—not whether the story merely contains a nearby place name.
Recommended approach
Write down the geographic area your firm actually serves and the practice areas it wants to discuss. During a Bosseo consultation, ask how those boundaries would affect story selection and page review. Keep coverage that is accurate, relevant and useful to the intended reader; reject items that stretch the firm’s service area or practice beyond what it can responsibly explain.
