1. Start with the geographic boundary
The U.S. Census Bureau records Mexico as a municipality in Missouri and places it in Audrain County. Its 2020–2024 ACS five-year population estimate is 11,477, with a margin of error of 22. That is a description of the place, not evidence of legal-news demand, competition, search volume, leads, cases, or revenue. A Legal News decision therefore needs a service-area question before a publishing question: is the firm addressing people in Mexico, people elsewhere in Audrain County, a wider Missouri audience, or several distinct areas? Those are different audiences and should not be collapsed into one geographic label.
Recommended approach
Define the geographic scope for each practice area before reviewing story ideas. Keep Mexico, Audrain County, and Missouri as separate choices in the firm’s editorial criteria. If the firm serves more than one area, decide whether a story should receive a local explanation, a Missouri-wide explanation, or no page at all. Use the consultation to identify the locations the firm actually wants its website to discuss; do not use the population estimate as a forecast.
