1. Geographic coverage should follow your actual service area
The Census identifies St. Joseph city as a municipality in Stearns County. A city page, a county page and a statewide page are not interchangeable. A story involving Minnesota law may matter to a St. Joseph firm without being a St. Joseph story, while an incident in Stearns County may be relevant to the firm’s clients even when it does not occur inside the city. Bosseo’s public Legal News description says stories are matched to a firm’s practice areas and state. It does not establish a particular St. Joseph, Stearns County or metropolitan coverage plan.
Recommended approach
Use the consultation to define the geographic boundary for review. Ask whether the proposed coverage should speak to St. Joseph residents, Stearns County readers, Minnesota readers, or a combination. Do not treat the city’s population estimate as proof that a local news topic has search demand. Decide which geographic references are accurate, useful to readers and consistent with the firm’s accepted matters.
