Start with Salem’s actual service boundary
Salem township is recorded in Allegan County, Michigan. That geographic relationship matters because a firm may serve Salem while also accepting matters from other communities, counties or metropolitan areas. Those areas should not be treated as interchangeable. A Salem-focused LSA review should identify whether the firm wants inquiries from Salem township alone, from Allegan County, or from a broader service territory. It should also separate the places the firm serves from the places it is legally prepared and operationally able to accept cases. The Census population estimate describes Salem township; it does not establish how many people search for a lawyer, how many households need legal help, or how much advertising competition exists.
Recommended approach
Bring a written service-area map to the consultation. Decide which locations should be included, excluded or reviewed separately, then compare those choices with licensing, travel, court and intake considerations. Do not use Salem’s population as a forecast.
