1. Start with the geography your firm actually serves
Malden is a municipality in Middlesex County, Massachusetts. A firm may serve Malden alone, other communities in Middlesex County, or a broader Massachusetts market. Those are different reporting scopes. A lead attribution setup should therefore make the firm’s service area explicit rather than treating every visitor or every nearby location as interchangeable. Population can establish the size of the municipality recorded by the Census, but it cannot establish legal need, search activity, competition, language preference, staffing requirements or likely lead volume.
Recommended approach
Before evaluating attribution, define which matters count as relevant to your practice: Malden inquiries, Middlesex County inquiries, Massachusetts inquiries, or another client-defined scope. Review whether location is captured during intake and whether a location-based page, referral or campaign can be distinguished from the legal service requested. This gives your firm a clearer basis for comparing sources without turning demographic context into a demand claim.
