1. Start with Chatham’s actual service boundary
The U.S. Census Bureau records Chatham as a municipal town in Barnstable County, Massachusetts, with a 2020–2024 ACS five-year population estimate of 6,681 and a margin of error of 19. That is geographic and population context only. It does not establish search demand, legal need, competition, call volume or the number of potential clients. For attribution, the important implementation question is how your firm defines a Chatham matter. A contact may identify Chatham as a residence, an incident location, a property location, a court-related location or simply a place where the person found your firm. Those are different fields and should not be collapsed into one assumption.
Recommended approach
Decide which geographic facts belong in intake and reporting. At minimum, review whether your team needs to distinguish Chatham from other Barnstable County locations and from Massachusetts-wide inquiries. Use geography as a qualification or segmentation field only when it serves an actual intake decision.
