1. Define the geographic record before you judge a source
Wheeling village is a municipality recorded in both Cook County and Lake County. The 2020–2024 ACS five-year population estimate for the village is 38,433, with a margin of error of 41. That is geographic and eligibility context; it does not establish legal demand, search volume, competition, call volume or revenue. Your attribution design should therefore distinguish a Wheeling inquiry from an inquiry elsewhere in Cook County or Lake County, rather than treating every nearby contact as one market. The record should also preserve the service or matter type and the stage reached. A visitor from Wheeling who views an estate page and later calls is a different measurement question from a visitor elsewhere who contacts the firm about another practice area.
Recommended approach
Decide which geographic fields matter to your firm before reviewing channel performance. At minimum, agree how staff will record the person’s stated location, the page visited, the matter type, the consultation outcome and the signed-case outcome. Treat the location as a qualification field—not proof that a particular channel works.
