1. Set the geographic boundary before selecting stories
The U.S. Census Bureau records Lindenhurst village as a municipality in Lake County and gives it a 2020–2024 ACS five-year population estimate of 14,417, with a margin of error of 30. That is geographic and population context only. It does not establish demand, competition, legal need, leads or revenue. For Legal News, the more important question is how a firm defines “local.” A story about Illinois law may be relevant to a Lindenhurst practice, while a story limited to another jurisdiction may not be useful even if it receives attention. Lake County can be a separate coverage layer from Lindenhurst itself, and neither should be silently treated as the whole Chicago metropolitan area or all of Illinois.
Recommended approach
At the consultation, write down the firm’s actual service area and ask how story relevance will be judged at each level: Lindenhurst, Lake County, Illinois, and any broader area the firm intentionally serves. Keep the page’s geographic language tied to the facts of the story and the firm’s real practice scope. Do not use the Lindenhurst population estimate as a forecast.
