1. Start with the service area, not the population number
The Census records Champaign city and its relationship to Champaign County. Those are not interchangeable geographies: a city, a county, a metropolitan area, a household, and an individual describe different things. The population estimate is therefore a boundary-setting fact, not a forecast of legal searches or advertising performance. Your first LSA decision is which locations your firm actually serves and which inquiries it can accept. A profile that reaches beyond your intended service area may create calls that are difficult to handle or outside your practice.
Recommended approach
Use the consultation to compare your current service area with the parts of Champaign County and any other areas your firm serves. Separate location eligibility from case eligibility. Decide which practice areas and locations deserve review before setting a budget.
