1. Define the geographic record before judging performance
Portland is recorded as a census-designated place in Connecticut, not as a generic label for every nearby market. The Census record places it in the Lower Connecticut River Valley Planning Region. That distinction matters when you review a lead’s location, landing page and case scope: a Portland inquiry, an inquiry from the wider planning region and an inquiry elsewhere in Connecticut should not automatically be treated as the same market. Population is eligibility evidence only. It cannot tell you how many people search for a lawyer, how many matters exist or which channel will produce a signed case.
Recommended approach
Decide which geographic fields your firm needs to evaluate: the person’s stated location, the page visited, the service sought and the area the firm accepts. Review those fields with counsel before using them to change budget or intake ownership. Keep Portland, the Lower Connecticut River Valley Planning Region and Connecticut as separate geographic references rather than merging them into one audience.
