1. Set the geographic boundary before selecting stories
Stanford is a census-designated place in Santa Clara County, California. A Stanford-serving firm should decide whether a story is relevant because it affects Stanford residents, people elsewhere in Santa Clara County, a broader California audience, or a practice area that serves clients beyond the county. Those are different editorial choices. A statewide legal development may matter to a Stanford firm even when Stanford is not named. Conversely, an incident elsewhere in California may be unsuitable if the firm does not serve that audience or cannot add a useful legal explanation. The Stanford population estimate is not a forecast of readership or legal need, so it should not be used to set a publishing quota or claim that a topic will generate inquiries.
Recommended approach
Create geographic rules before reviewing individual stories. For each proposed page, record the affected jurisdiction, the firm’s service area, and the reason a Stanford or Santa Clara County reader would find the explanation useful. Review statewide coverage separately from local incident coverage so the firm can measure the two audiences rather than blending them.
