1. Set the geographic brief before selecting stories
Scotts Valley is a municipality in Santa Cruz County, California. The 2020–2024 ACS five-year estimate records 12,044 residents, with a margin of error of 46. That is geographic context, not evidence of search demand, legal need, competition, leads, cases, or revenue. A Legal News program therefore needs a more precise coverage rule than “local news.” For some firms, a story involving Scotts Valley may be relevant. For others, a Santa Cruz County matter, a California statute, or a statewide appellate decision may better match the clients they serve. Bosseo’s public Legal News page says its system matches stories to a firm’s practice areas and state. Ask how that state-level scope would be narrowed or prioritized for your actual service area.
Recommended approach
Write a coverage brief that names acceptable geographic levels—Scotts Valley, Santa Cruz County, California, or another area the firm intentionally serves—and excludes stories outside the firm’s practice or client scope. Treat the Census record as a boundary and context check, not as a forecast.
