1. Set the geographic brief before evaluating coverage
August is recorded as a CDP in San Joaquin County, California. A firm serving August may also define its service area by county, nearby communities, a broader California territory, or another legally and commercially relevant boundary. Those are different geographic choices, and Legal News should not silently treat August’s population as a proxy for the whole county or state. Bosseo’s public Legal News page describes monitoring local and national legal-news sources for a firm’s state and matching stories to its practice areas. That makes the geographic brief an important buying question: which California stories would be useful to the people and matters the firm actually serves?
Recommended approach
Bring a written service-area definition to the consultation. Separate August from San Joaquin County and from any broader California coverage. Ask how relevance would be assessed when a story is statewide, county-specific, or tied to a location outside the firm’s accepted matters. Treat the August population estimate as context only, not as a forecast.
