1. Start with the firm’s actual Birmingham service boundary
The U.S. Census Bureau records Birmingham city as a municipality with a 2020–2024 ACS five-year population estimate of 198,173, with a margin of error of 718. The recorded county relationships are Jefferson County and Shelby County. That is geographic context, not evidence of legal demand, search volume, competition, leads or revenue. It also does not establish that every visitor to a Birmingham law firm lives inside the city or either recorded county. Before a video intake is designed, the firm should define whether it serves Birmingham city, selected communities in Jefferson County, selected communities in Shelby County, all of Alabama, or another boundary. That decision affects the location questions, routing rules and escalation language.
Recommended approach
Write the service boundary into the intake brief. Ask where the prospective client’s matter occurred, where the person lives when relevant, and whether the firm accepts matters outside its preferred geography. Do not use Birmingham’s population estimate to set a conversion target or infer staffing needs.
