About Kennewick

Kennewick, Washington, is located in the southeast corner of the state, at the confluence of the Columbia, Snake, and Yakima rivers. The city is home to approximately 81,000 people and has a rich history dating back thousands of years.

Prehistoric Kennewick

The area now known as Kennewick was home to various indigenous groups for thousands of years before Europeans arrived in the region. The first recorded European to explore the area was the fur trapper Peter Skene Ogden in 1825. However, evidence suggests that people have lived in the region for at least 10,000 years.

One of the most significant prehistoric discoveries in North America occurred near Kennewick in 1996. A man discovered human remains while he was wading in the Columbia River. Further investigation revealed that the bones were more than 9,000 years old and belonged to a Native American man who has since been nicknamed “Kennewick Man.” The discovery sparked controversy, as many Native American tribes claimed that the remains should be returned to them for reburial.

Kennewick’s Early Years

The first permanent American settlers arrived in Kennewick in the late 1800s. At that time, the area was primarily used for farming and ranching. The arrival of the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1887 allowed Kennewick to grow and develop as a transportation hub.

In 1904, Kennewick became an incorporated city. The city’s economy continued to be based on agriculture throughout much of the 20th century.

Modern Kennewick

Today, Kennewick is a thriving community with a diverse economy. While agriculture is still an important industry in the region, other sectors such as healthcare and technology have grown in recent years.

One of the city’s main attractions is its proximity to outdoor recreation opportunities. People who live in Kennewick have easy access to hiking, boating, fishing, and skiing. The city is also home to numerous parks and trails, including the Columbia River Trail and the Sacagawea Heritage Trail.

In terms of education, Kennewick is served by the Kennewick School District, which includes 34 schools. The district has received numerous accolades for academic achievement and innovative programs.

Kennewick also has a thriving arts and cultural scene. The Toyota Center hosts concerts, sporting events, and trade shows. The Three Rivers Convention Center attracts business conferences and other events.

For thousands of years, people have called the Kennewick area home. Today, it is a vibrant city that offers residents a high quality of life. While Kennewick’s history is fascinating, its current economy and recreational opportunities make it an attractive place to live and work in the modern era.
