About Clarksville

Clarksville, Tennessee, is a city with a rich history and vibrant modern life. Located near the Kentucky border, Clarksville is named after General George Rogers Clark, who was involved in winning the American Revolution’s Battle of Vincennes.

The earliest settlers of Clarksville arrived in the late 1700s. They were primarily farmers who wanted to take advantage of the rich land and the nearby Cumberland River. In 1784, John Montgomery established a small settlement in the area that would later become Clarksville. Soon after, other pioneers followed suit.

During the Civil War, Clarksville played a significant role due to its strategic location along the railroad and river systems. The Union army captured the city in 1862 and used it as a base for further operations in Tennessee. A massive battle took place in Franklin and Nashville, leading to Union victory, which dictated the end of the war.

After the war, Clarksville became a thriving hub for commerce and industry. Many factories and mills began operating in the city, thanks to its central location and plentiful natural resources. Today, Clarksville is known for manufacturing, healthcare, education, and as a military community.

Living in modern-day Clarksville offers residents a unique blend of small-town charm and big-city amenities. The downtown area is full of historic architecture with refurbished buildings. Austin Peay State University comprises over 10% of the population, adding intellectual flair to the city.

Clarksville has everything you would expect of any modern metropolis—malls, restaurants, parks, sporting clubs and entertainment venues — but it also has some unique features that set it apart from other cities its size. Residents enjoy an excellent quality of life, with an annual cost strategy that’s below most National averages residents able to live happily within their budget.

As a historical city with a rich past mixed with modern life conveniences, Clarksville continues to grow economically while preserving its roots that keep it connected to its history. It is an excellent city for young families, military retirees or anyone who wants to experience a slice of small-town America with proximity to larger cities like Nashville and Louisville.
