About Upper Darby

Upper Darby is a suburban township located in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. The township is surrounded by several other townships including Haverford, Yeadon, and Philadelphia. Upper Darby boasts of a rich history that dates back to the 17th century and has since then evolved into one of the best places to live in Pennsylvania.

The earliest settlers in Upper Darby were predominantly Quakers who came from Wales, Scotland, and England. Initially, the township was part of the land grant given to William Penn by King Charles II in 1681, and it remained undeveloped for several decades. It wasn’t until the 18th century that people started settling in the area. The Lenni Lenape Native Americans who were the original inhabitants of this land called it “Tongassong”. It was only later that the name became Upper Darby township.

In 1736, Josiah Langdale built a gristmill on the Cobbs Creek which later became the township’s main business center for several years. In 1790, the first schoolhouse was established in Upper Darby on what is now known as School Lane. The school served as the staple of academic excellence for many years until more schools were established.

During the early 1900s, Upper Darby experienced rapid growth as a result of several factors including good transportation infrastructure and access to water supply. In 1907, an electric trolley line connecting Philadelphia to Upper Darby was established. The trolley line made it easier for people to get to and from Philadelphia and increased economic activity within the township. By the end of the decade, many other businesses had also set up shop in Upper Darby solidifying its position as a commercial hub.

Today, Upper Darby is home to over 80,000 people, making it one of the most populous townships in Delaware County. The township has an efficient transportation system, including several bus routes, the suburban trolley, and the train’s Market-Frankford Line. These modes of transportation make it easy for residents to commute to Philadelphia and other nearby townships for work or leisure.

Upper Darby is also well known for its diverse community. The township boasts of a unique mix of cultures, including African-American, Irish-American, Italian-American, and Asian-American communities, among others. This cultural diversity adds color to the social life in the township, with various community events and festivals taking place throughout the year.

There are several recreational facilities in Upper Darby for residents to enjoy. The township is home to several parks, playgrounds, and bike trails where residents can engage in outdoor activities such as cycling, jogging, and picnicking. The Upper Darby Performing Arts Center is also a popular attraction where residents can enjoy live performances by local and international artists.

In conclusion, Upper Darby has come a long way since its earliest days as an undeveloped land grant. Today, the township is a thriving suburb that offers its residents access to excellent educational systems, modern healthcare facilities, efficient transportation infrastructure, and diverse communities. The rich history of Upper Darby township remains evident in the landmark buildings and institutions that stand today serving their respective communities.
