About Amherst

Amherst is a town in Erie County, western New York, named after the American Revolutionary War’s General Jeffrey Amherst. The town was founded in 1818 by the New York State Legislature as part of a larger plan to subdivide the Holland Land Company, which had purchased millions of acres in western New York in the early 19th century. Today, Amherst is one of Buffalo’s suburbs and is home to over 122,000 residents.

Early history of Amherst

The Seneca Indians were known to inhabit what is now Amherst before any white settlers arrived. The area was settled by European-Americans in the 1820s because of its fertile lands and fresh water. In 1854, the town established a railroad station and became a commercial and agricultural center.

In the early years of the town, many people settled in the nearby villages of Williamsville and Getzville. These villages became famous for their taverns, blacksmith shops, and local markets.
