Amherst is a town in Erie County, western New York, named after the American Revolutionary War’s General Jeffrey Amherst. The town was founded in 1818 by the New York State Legislature as part of a larger plan to subdivide the Holland Land Company, which had purchased millions of acres in western New York in the early 19th century.
