About Nashua

Nashua, the second-largest city in New Hampshire, has a rich history dating back to the mid-17th century. Originally inhabited by the Pennacook Native American tribe, the area was known for its fertile soil and abundant water resources, making it an excellent location for agriculture and milling.

In 1656, a group of English settlers purchased the land from the Pennacook tribe and established the town of Dunstable, which encompassed present-day Nashua and surrounding areas in Massachusetts. It wasn’t until 1746 that Nashua (then called “Dunstable”) was officially separated from Massachusetts and became part of New Hampshire.

Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, Nashua was a hub for textile production, specifically cotton and wool mills. The construction of the Nashua Manufacturing Company’s mill complex in the early 1800s brought significant economic growth to the city, and by the late 1800s, Nashua had become one of the preeminent textile centers in New England.

However, like many other industrial cities in the Northeast, Nashua’s textile industry declined in the mid-20th century due to overseas competition and technological advances. The city began to diversify its economy, focusing on industries such as healthcare, technology, and education.

Today, Nashua is a thriving city with a population of over 87,000 people. Residents enjoy a vibrant downtown area filled with local businesses, restaurants, and cultural attractions like the Nashua Historical Society Museum. The city is also home to several top-rated schools, including Nashua High School South and St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing.

Nashua’s location along the scenic Merrimack River provides ample opportunities for outdoor recreation, with several parks and trails in and around the city. Rivier University provides further opportunities for cultural activities with its performing arts center.

Overall, life in Nashua offers a unique blend of historical charm and modern amenities. From its rich history to its diverse economy and opportunities for outdoor recreation and cultural activities, Nashua is a wonderful place to live, work and visit.
