About Missoula

Missoula, Montana is a city with a rich and varied history, nestled in the western Rocky Mountains. Founded in 1860 as Hellgate Village, it was soon renamed after the Missoula River, which runs through the valley. Over the years, Missoula has been a site for Native American hunting and trading, a military fort, and a transport hub for lumber and mining materials.

While early non-Native American settlers came to the area as fur trappers and miners, it was the arrival of the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1883 that really put Missoula on the map. The railroad brought in thousands of people and spurred the growth of commerce and industry in the region.

One of Missoula’s most notable historical events took place in 1908: the local lumber company, owned by William A. Clark—himself one of Montana’s wealthiest businessmen and politicians—was destroyed by fire. The ensuing investigation uncovered widespread corruption on Clark’s part, including bribery of state legislators which had helped launch his career.

Today, Missoula has a thriving arts and cultural scene that reflects its diverse population. Home to the world-famous University of Montana, which brings in students from all over the world, the city boasts a busy downtown area filled with cafes, galleries, theaters, and restaurants. There’s always an event or activity to do—for instance, every August Missoula hosts the International Wildlife Film Festival.

Montana is known for its natural splendor and Missoula is no exception: surrounded by mountains and forests with easy access to nearby lakes and rivers, it’s a trekking and outdoor adventure paradise. The Rattlesnake National Recreation Area is a favorite spot for hikers and mountain bikers.

The population of Missoula as of 2021 is estimated to be around 75,516 – not too large or too small. Many people are attracted to Missoula Montana because of the close-knit community and friendly folks. It is a wonderful place to raise a family or retire, as there are many local attractions and activities.

Home to both urban conveniences and wild pleasures, Missoula is an ideal destination for anyone attracted to the unique history and natural beauty of Montana.
