About Columbia

Columbia, Missouri is a city with a rich history and modern-day amenities that make it an appealing place to live. The city was established in 1818 by Daniel Boone’s son, Nathan, who named it “Smithton” in honor of a local settler. However, in 1821 the name was changed to “Columbia” because another town in Missouri already had the same name.

One of the defining moments in Columbia’s history came during the Civil War. The city was occupied by both Union and Confederate forces at different times during the conflict. However, the Battle of Centralia, which took place just outside of Columbia on September 27, 1864, was one of the bloodiest small engagements of the war. The Union forces managed to drive off the Confederates, but not before dozens of soldiers on both sides were killed.

After the war ended, Columbia thrived as a hub for agriculture and education. The University of Missouri was founded in Columbia in 1839, making it one of the oldest universities west of the Mississippi River. Today, the university is one of the biggest employers in the city and attracts students from all over the world.

Modern-day Columbia is a vibrant community with plenty to offer residents. One of the most popular attractions is the District, a downtown area that features unique shops, restaurants, and bars. The Blue Note is a popular music venue that hosts both local and nationally-known artists. Another popular spot is Stephens Lake Park, which offers hiking trails, fishing ponds, and a beach area.

The city is also known for its festivals and events. The True/False Film Fest is an annual documentary film festival that attracts filmmakers and fans from all over the world. Columbia residents also enjoy Roots N Blues N BBQ, an annual music festival with national acts and plenty of barbecue.

Overall, Columbia has a rich history and modern amenities that make it an attractive place to live. Whether residents are interested in art, music, outdoor activities, or education, there is something for everyone in this bustling Midwestern city.
