History

Burnsville’s early history began in 1855 when it was first settled by Henry Hamilton Buck. Buck built his home near the present-day intersection of County Road 34 and Interstate 35W. The area was heavily wooded and largely uninhabited at the time, but Buck and his family persevered and eventually founded what would become known as “Buck Hill.”

As more settlers arrived in the area, a small farming community began to take shape. The town was initially called “Black Dog,” after a nearby creek, but was later renamed Burnsville after an early settler named William Byrne.

The community continued to grow throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s. By the 1940s, Burnsville was a bustling town with a population of around 700 people. In the decades that followed, the city continued to expand and develop into the thriving community it is today.
