About Beaconsfield

Beaconsfield, Massachusetts is a small suburban neighborhood located in the City of Brookline, located in Norfolk County, Massachusetts. It has a rich and fascinating history that spans centuries and is today a thriving residential community with much to offer its residents.

The name Beacon struck from the Old English word “becen” that means beacon or hill. The neighborhood known as Beaconsfield was once part of the ancient town of Brighton, Massachusetts that was established in 1655, by English Puritan settlers. This land was owned by Captain Isaac Johnson who was one of the earliest settlers of Plymouth Colony and married Elizabeth Pole who was Robert Cushman’s step-daughter. After the deaths of Johnson and his wife, their possessions were sold to pay debts and were acquired by Edward Devotion, who bequeathed much of his estate to support Brookline’s oldest school still in existence.

The area that is now Beacon Street was once the route taken by British troops during the Revolutionary War but was later separated from Boston between 1804 and 1810 and became part of present-day Brookline.

In the early 19th century, the neighborhood began to develop its identity as a summer resort community for wealthy Bostonians seeking to escape the city’s heat. Mansions were built along Beacon Street, and the neighborhood’s parks and tree-lined streets added to its idyllic charm.

In the late 19th century, many residents began to settle in Beaconsfield year-round, attracted by its quality-of-life offerings. The city became home to many influential people such as William Townsend Porter who started Ladies Home Journal in 1883. Many famous writers resided here too; among them were Percy Bysshe Shelley, John Greenleaf Whittier, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr., Francis Parkman as well as literary figures associated with nearby Harvard University.

Modern life in Beaconsfield still retains much of its historical charm. The community is home to many beautiful parks that offer natural settings for outdoor activities, including the popular Hancock Park. Beaconsfield Village is the heart of the neighborhood and provides residents with everything from local coffee shops and bakeries to award-winning restaurants.

Beaconsfield is also home to great schools such as Driscoll Elementary School and Brookline High School, which are both part of the top-rated Brookline Public Schools system. The area is well-served by public transportation and easy access to downtown Boston. This accessibility makes it a great option for those who work in the city but seek a quieter living environment.

Overall, Beaconsfield has a unique and fascinating history that still lives on today through its beautiful architecture, lush greenery, and strong community spirit. It remains a quintessential New England residential community that attracts people seeking a vibrant and welcoming lifestyle away from the hustle and bustle of urban life.
