About Towson

Towson, Maryland, is a thriving suburban town located just north of Baltimore City. The town has a rich history that stretches back to the early 18th century when it was first settled.

Prior to European settlement, the Towson area was home to the Susquehannock and Iroquois Nations. With the arrival of Europeans, the land was gradually purchased and developed for farming and industry. In 1752, two brothers from Pennsylvania named Thomas and Ezekiel Towson purchased more than 400 acres of land in present-day Towson. They erected a stone house, which still stands to this day in a historic park near downtown Towson.

The town of Towson began to take shape in the 1800s with the establishment of the York Turnpike, a major toll road that ran through the town. As the turnpike allowed more people and goods to travel through Towson, many shops, taverns, and small businesses began to spring up along its route. The town also benefited from the construction of several major Baltimore and Ohio Railroad stations, which brought even more commerce and industry to the area.

During the Civil War, Towson played an important role as a Union troop staging ground and medical center. Some of the historic buildings from this era still stand today in downtown Towson, including St. John’s Episcopal Church (home to a museum about the war) and the old county jail (now a boutique hotel).

Towson continued to grow throughout the early 20th century with the development of residential neighborhoods, schools, and parks. The town’s central location between Baltimore City and rural northern Maryland made it an attractive place for families to settle down. Today, Towson is home to nearly 60,000 people and is the county seat of Baltimore County.
