About Oak Lawn

Oak Lawn, Illinois is a thriving community located in Cook County, about 14 miles from downtown Chicago. The town was first settled in the early 1800s when it was primarily farmland until the railroad arrived in 1871, which brought with it new opportunities for growth and development.

The name of the town is derived from its mostly flat terrain and the abundance of oak trees that once covered the area. The trees also played a key role in the town’s economy, providing wood for local mills that produced agricultural equipment and furniture.

Oak Lawn experienced significant growth in the post-World War II era, due to its close proximity to Chicago and the expansion of the highways surrounding the town. With its location along one of the busiest highways in the country (Interstate 294), Oak Lawn became a popular stopover for travelers heading west or south.

Despite being a suburban town just outside of Chicago, Oak Lawn has a history of being a very diverse community. African American families began moving into Oak Lawn during the 1950s, and by the end of that decade, they made up almost 10% of the population.

In addition to being diverse, Oak Lawn has always been a town committed to community service and helping those in need. For many years, the town has provided support to a variety of charities and organizations including food drives, blood drives, and veteran’s programs.

Today, Oak Lawn continues to be a vibrant community that offers residents an excellent quality of life. With its proximity to Chicago and its excellent transportation infrastructure, residents are able to enjoy all that city life has to offer while still maintaining a suburban lifestyle. The town has an excellent school system, a variety of parks and recreational facilities, and a vibrant downtown area filled with shops, restaurants, and entertainment options.

Overall, Oak Lawn has an interesting history that reflects both its commitment to diversity and its deep roots in the agricultural industry. Today, the town continues to thrive and grow, offering residents an excellent quality of life in a welcoming and supportive community.
