About Nampa

Nampa, Idaho is a small city that is located in Canyon County, in southwestern Idaho. Nampa’s history dates back to the late 19th century, when it was originally known as New Jerusalem by its founder, Alexander Duffes. The name was later changed to Nampa which means “footprint” in Shoshone, reflecting the impact that the town would have on the surrounding area.

Nampa’s early years were primarily focused on agriculture, with crops such as sugar beets and onions dominating the local economy. In the early 20th century, the construction of the Caldwell-Nampa Interurban railway sparked a period of growth for the town, as it provided easier transportation access to the surrounding areas. This growth continued through the post-World War II era, and by the 1970s, Nampa had become one of Idaho’s most important agricultural centers.

Today, Nampa has grown into a bustling city with a population of over 100,000 people. While agriculture still plays an important role in its economy, it has also evolved into a hub for manufacturing and healthcare industries. Major employers in Nampa include facilities for medical device manufacturer Amalgamated Sugar Company, and hospital operator St. Lukes Health Systems.

In addition to its strong employment base, living in Nampa offers residents a diverse range of recreational activities. One popular attraction is Lake Lowell, a large reservoir that sits on Nampa’s southern border. The lake provides opportunities for a variety of water-based activities such as fishing, boating, and swimming. Just south of town is the Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge which is home to many species of birds and affords great hiking opportunities.

Another popular destination in Nampa is the Idaho Center which hosts sporting events, concerts and trade shows throughout the year. The venue is home to the Snake River Stampede rodeo event each July which attracts thousands of visitors every year.

In addition to its many recreational offerings, Nampa is also home to a diverse array of cultural institutions. The Warhawk Air Museum is a must-visit for history buffs while the Nampa Art Walk, held in the downtown area each summer, showcases the work of local artists.

Overall, Nampa’s history as an agricultural hub has given way to its current status as a modern and thriving city. Its mix of employment opportunities, recreational activities, and cultural institutions make it a great place to call home.
