Wilmington Delaware is a small city located in the northern part of the state, just 30 miles south of Philadelphia. It is the largest city in Delaware and has a rich history dating back to the 17th century.

The land that Wilmington now occupies was originally inhabited by the Lenape tribe, who called the area “Pahkehoma.” In 1638, Swedish settlers arrived and established a colony called New Sweden, which included what is now Wilmington. The Dutch later took control of the area in 1655 before it was finally ceded to the British in 1664.

During the American Revolutionary War, Wilmington served as an important supply center for the Continental Army. In 1787, Delaware became the first state to ratify the United States Constitution, and Wilmington served as its capital until 1792.

Throughout the 19th century, Wilmington grew into a bustling industrial center with shipbuilding, textile mills, and gunpowder manufacturing dominating its economy. After World War II, Wilmington entered a period of decline as its industries began to move elsewhere and urbanization took hold.

Despite these challenges, Wilmington remains an important hub for banking and financial services with companies like JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America having a significant presence in the city. Wilmington is also home to numerous cultural institutions such as The Delaware Art Museum and The Grand Opera House. The city prides itself on being walkable with restaurants, cafes and music venues within close proximity.

Today, Wilmington is a cultural hub and is home to many young professionals who are attracted to its affordable cost of living compared to neighboring cities such as Philadelphia. Many young people have started to move to Wilmington for its eclectic dining options, walkability and yearly events such as the Wilmington Flower Market and Riverfront Blues Festival.

Although there are still economic challenges facing Wilmington, it continues to evolve and thrive as a city with a rich history and a promising future.
