The early 1800s saw the establishment of manufacturing industries such as hat making, which helped put Danbury on the map. By the mid-1800s, Danbury was one of the largest hat producing centers in the world. The hat industry brought an influx of immigrants to Danbury, who contributed to its cultural diversity.

In 1902, one of Danbury’s biggest tragedies occurred when a fire swept through downtown, destroying many buildings and killing seven people. Despite this tragedy, Danbury continued to develop into a thriving city with industry and commerce still playing a pivotal role.
