West Sacramento, located just across the river from California’s state capital, Sacramento, has a rich and intriguing history that stretches back over 150 years. In the mid-19th century, the area that is now West Sacramento was an important hub for agriculture and transportation. Farmers would bring their crops across the Sacramento River to be shipped to markets in the Bay Area and beyond. At this time, much of the land was owned by John A. Sutter, who is famously remembered for his role in the California Gold Rush.

It wasn’t until 1845 that West Sacramento became its own city. Before then, it was known as Washington Township, which encompassed much of present-day Yolo County. After years of petitioning the state government, West Sacramento was granted its own charter and officially incorporated as a city on January 1, 1987.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, West Sacramento experienced a lot of growth and development due to its location near major waterways and railways. The city became a major transportation hub for goods coming in and out of Northern California. In fact, it was once known as the “Gateway to the Gold Fields” due to its proximity to Sacramento’s bustling river port.

As time progressed, West Sacramento continued to see growth and expansion. During World War II, the city was home to Camp Bryte, a United States Army training camp that housed over 17,000 soldiers during its operation. After the war ended, the camp was decommissioned, and much of its land was sold off to private developers.

Today, West Sacramento is home to over 55,000 people and boasts a thriving economy that includes industries such as agriculture, technology, and healthcare. Residents enjoy access to parks and bike trails along the riverfront, as well as excellent schools and other amenities.

West Sacramento’s central location also makes it easy to travel to other cities and popular destinations in the region. San Francisco, Lake Tahoe, and the Napa Valley wine country are all within a few hours’ drive from this charming city.
