About La Mesa

La Mesa, located just east of San Diego, California, is a city with an interesting and significant history. The land that makes up La Mesa today was formerly inhabited by the Kumeyaay people, who were farmers and hunters. In the late 1700s, the area was claimed by Spain and subsequently by Mexico following their struggle for independence from Spain. During the Mexican-American War, the United States claimed San Diego, including La Mesa, as part of California.

In 1869, La Mesa was founded by four families who built houses in the area – two of which are still standing today. At this time, La Mesa was known as “Spring House” due to its abundant natural springs. By the early 1900s, La Mesa was becoming a popular location for San Diegans to visit for fresh air and quiet mountain views.

In the mid-20th century, a housing boom occurred in La Mesa, and the population grew rapidly. Today, La Mesa has a thriving community of over 60,000 residents and is known for its small-town charm and scenic beauty.

Modern life in La Mesa offers residents many amenities. The city is home to several parks and walking trails, including Mission Trails Regional Park – one of the largest urban parks in the United States. Lake Murray provides opportunities for fishing and boating, while local restaurants offer a range of culinary experiences.

For families with children, La Mesa has an excellent public school system. Grossmont Union High School District serves four high schools in La Mesa – Grossmont High School, Helix Charter High School, Monte Vista High School, and Steele Canyon High School.

La Mesa is also home to several annual events that draw visitors from all over Southern California. One such event is Oktoberfest, held annually in October in downtown La Mesa. The event features live music, traditional German food and beer, and carnival rides.

Overall, La Mesa’s rich history and modern-day offerings make it a desirable place to live and visit. From its early days as a quiet mountain retreat to the bustling city it is today, La Mesa has much to offer both residents and visitors.
