El Cajon, which means “the box” in Spanish, is a city located in San Diego County, California. The area was first inhabited by the Kumeyaay Native American tribe for thousands of years before the arrival of Spanish colonizers in the late 18th century. The Spanish established the Presidio of San Diego and later founded the mission system, which brought about significant changes for the indigenous people of the area.

In the 1830s, the land that is now El Cajon was granted to Dona Maria Antonia Estudillo by the Mexican government. Her family owned the land until the United States acquired California in 1848 as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ending the Mexican-American War. The Estudillo family continued to live on and farm the land until it was sold in 1900 to Frank P. Shands, a wealthy businessman from Boston.

Shands saw great potential in the fertile land and established a citrus grove on the property. He also developed irrigation systems and paved roads, which led to increased settlement and development in the area. In 1912, Shands officially founded El Cajon as a townsite.

In the early 20th century, El Cajon became known for its agricultural output and was considered a hub for fruit and vegetable production. After World War II, however, the city experienced rapid growth and development as it became a suburban community for military personnel from nearby Camp Pendleton and Naval Base San Diego.

Today, El Cajon is a diverse community of over 100,000 people with a thriving business district and numerous parks and recreational facilities. Residents enjoy access to top-rated schools, healthcare facilities, and cultural attractions such as the Olaf Wieghorst Museum and Western Heritage Center.

El Cajon has also become known for its annual events such as the Mother Goose Parade – one of the largest parades on the West Coast – and the Cajon Classic Cruise, a weekly summer car show that has become a popular tradition in the community.
